After much discussion- the conclusion is this bird, originally thought to be a Gould's Petrel , is most likely a dark Cook's Petrel

John Dowding with colour banded wrybill - Upper Rangitata

Twelve breeding adult wrybills were colour banded on the Upper Rangitata in Oct 2009- and all survived the breeding season. These birds have now been sighted from the Manukau, Firth of Thames and as far north as Whangarei Harbour in the North island.
